On Thin Ice

Christmas came early — way early — this year. I got home on Thursday and found the little yellow Post-It note on my mailbox that signifies happy things (The doorman has a package for you! You’re loved!) . . . My Louis Vuitton bag arrived a whole day before eluxury originally said it would! Now you might be thinking, How is it Christmas if you’re buying yourself things? How is it Christmas if I’m not buying myself things? (Come to think of it, how is it a Monday or Thursday or Saturday?)

But I digress. I had something of utmost importance to discuss today: an awful trend in Olympic figure skating costumes. Yes, I know, skating costumes are an easy mark; they’ve long been too spangly, too feathery, too cut-out in all the wrong places . . . and that’s just the men. (Like I said, easy mark.) With a few exceptions, like Nancy Kerrigan’s Vera Wang some years back, the women’s costumes have hardly been the stuff of haute couture. But this Olympics has brought forth a real abomination. Can someone tell me why the women started wearing those awful catsuits? Irina Slutskaya, I’m talking to you! So not flattering. Are you auditioning to replace the lead singer of The Darkness?

The outfits remind me of the skin-tight suits that male swimmers have been wearing the past few Olympics. They came in different permutations — mid-thigh, pedal-pushers, ankle length, all low-rise — and my mom deemed them all “nasty.” (Especially on Michael Phelps, who you just imagine had to have had a bikini wax to wear his. Ewwwww.) And I thought old-school Speedos were bad! Just because you’re a world-class athlete with an amazing physique does not mean you need to dress like Aquaman.

I think I’ve found a new cause. Extreme Makeover: Olympics Edition. Hey, athletes, move that spandex!

hey julie! you should have posted a better pic of the LV, this one probably does not do it justice, coz it doesn’t look *that* cute to me here as it does over at eluxury. and congrats on your book!

And what about the two unitard costumes last night, the ones that were cut on a bias down to here and looked like something you’d expect to see Brittany Spears in? Eeeww.

Sorry, but I think Micheal Phelps looks like a frickin’ bad-ass in that pic you posted…my opinion, however, might be a little different if he were adorned with copious sequins and feathers…
Figure skating “costumes” are just that…all for show. Swimsuits are actually functional and have very little to do with fashion.
That said, I totally second the idea for an Extreme Makeover for the skaters! Did you see that tassel and pasties get-up from the ice dancing competition?!? Horrible.

I love the bag, it’s sooo cute. I liked the performances of Irina Slutskaya, too, she is an amazing athlete, but her appearance is not so good as her artistry on ice. That catsuit wasn’t appealing at all: well, it can look good on Justin Darkness, but on her it was ridiculous!

Grace, I got the Hermes books a few seasons ago so don’t know if you’ll be able to find them at any store now - you might want to try ebay…

JayKay, I understand the swimsuits are functional but can it really be that comfortable to wear them that low?! :-)

And Nina, yeah, lousy lighting in my apt at night. Will try to post new pix if I have time this week….
