Spreading the Obsession
I have a friend — I’ll call her Ms. X to protect her identity — who has now officially crossed over to the dark side. And so an angel just got her wings. Or should it be a devil just got her horns?
You see, I first introduced Ms. X to Lainey Keogh’s cashmere about four years ago during a trip to Bergdorf’s. She ended up buying a fringed, deep orange sweater with a low V back — a rather adventurous piece, but since it was on sale I considered that easing into the habit. Her second Lainey, a fuschia pullover, was a Christmas present from her sister (picked out by moi) this past year. She was hooked.
So when Lainey came to town last week, Ms. X was the first person I told. On the first day, I went by myself and ended up doing a bit of damage. On the last day of the trunk show — and I wasn’t even planning to go back because I didn’t need the temptation — Ms. X, requiring not much strong-arming on my part, decided to go check it out.
Now Ms. X claims not to be a shopper. She could have fooled me! We both tried on piles of sweaters, and in the end she bought two: a beautifully rich teal sleeveless pullover with cap sleeves and a cardigan in a deep green shade I’d never seen before. Amazing. I was so proud of her — but prouder of myself that Ileft empty-handed. Not that I wasn’t tempted by a certain berry-colored knee-length coat… but I told myself I wasn’t allowed!
The best part of initiating a newbie into my shopping cult? Well, for one, I don’t feel quite as guilty when someone else is buying stuff too — and now I’ve got a permanent partner-in-crime when it comes to Lainey. Plus I’ve realized that I can find satisfaction in someone else’s shopping success. Okay, maybe total satisfaction is asking a little too much. I’m not that selfless!
