Is Brown the New Black?

News flash: Gucci is instituting a new dress code for salespeople at the boutiques, switching from coolly chic all black to a nice warm shade of chocolate brown. What is this, UPS? Not quite, but it does seem like the end of an era (the Tom Ford era, to be exact).

So what can brown do for you? On the one hand, brown is more approachable than black, which sends the subliminal message of “don’t bother me.” Admittedly not a good message for a salesperson to send, but then again that’s just part of the shopping experience. On the other hand, an all-brown outfit just isn’t as slimming, especially since it makes people think of a big chunk of fudge when they see you. Plus, the accessories (GG pins, scarves, pocket squares and loafers) that will be de rigeur smack of flight attendant wear, and not in the good ironic way either.

As much as I love a rich brown leather slingback or chocolate cashmere cardigan in the winter, brown the rest of the year kind of gives me the blahs. Brown the new black? Nah, I’ll stick with the old black. Or the new, new black: white!

I totally agree with you. I still can’t see the brown as a really fashionable colour.
