Furry Friends

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

So I have this weird relationship with fur. I have a friend who is big-time anti-fur, so when we sat on the same floor at work, I didn’t dare wear fur to the office (or I’d have to sneak in the long way, and not walk by her door). I can’t help it; I do love the look and feel of fur. But I have to say, I’ve bought a few stoles and I don’t really wear them much. Not even the rabbit ones. (But that’s because I used to have pet rabbits and that just makes me feel bad.)

Part of the problem is that sometimes you see fur (usually vintage) that is just a bit too… real. As in, fringe that turns out to be tails and faces. Ewww. (That reminds me of the old crocodile bags you sometimes see, with the entire croc on it.) I have to say, today’s furriers are just a wee bit more tasteful, and thank goodness for that. Now if I could only stop thinking of squirrel fur as road kill…

Back Off the Wagon

Remember how I said I was going on a shopping diet? What, was I out of my mind? Fall is my favorite fashion season (and season in general) so I just can’t stop myself. In the stultifying heat of summer there’s really nothing better than looking at all the early fall collections and planning out your October, November and beyond. Cashmere, tweeds, a little fur… And of course, just thinking about shopping — especially for things you can’t wear for months — just makes you want to shop for what you can wear now.

Besides, without shopping, what would I ever write about?!

P.S. For Coralie: Here’s the watermelon tourmaline necklace I made!

My Very Own Rain Dance

Tuesday, July 4th, 2006

It’s been a weird week of weather — hot and humid one minute, torrential rain the next. I was walking down the street the other day when I saw a woman struggling with a plastic shopping bag — you know, the kind you get at the grocery store. I thought she might have had a big box of something in there, but in fact it was her handbag. Okay, so maybe the Gristedes bag didn’t go with the outfit, but hey, this was a woman after my own heart!

I wasn’t as smart last week when I looked out my office window around 6 p.m. and saw that the sky had gone black. Clearly not a good sign. But still I dawdled, and didn’t leave until after 7. Dumb move. I was wearing some cute peach satin Gucci sandals so I figured I would ould take the B line of the subway, because you can get there through the concourse below the building, and then switch at 59th Street to the line closer to my apartment. At least I had remembered to bring my umbrella that morning — I could make a run for it the last few blocks.

Nope. Just my luck — the entrance to the concourse was closed. Dammit! So I had to walk in the rain the two blocks to the subway and then three blocks on the other end. Needless to say, my shoes were soaked. Now that they’ve finally dried out, I’ve gotta take them to the shoe repair store for some TLC. And here’s the worst part of it: The next day at my office I opened a drawer in my desk, and what do you know? There was a pair of flip flops in there. My emergency kit, of sorts. Well what’s the point of being prepared when you don’t remember that you are?!

Hope your Fourth is dry, everyone!
