Here’s The Skinny
So I finally broke down and did it. After months of whining about the return of the skinny jean, I marched myself down to Barneys and bought myself a pair of Citizens of Humanity Ava Straight Leg Jean, Dark Paris. See, they’re not completely skinny — not stove-pipe Mick Jagger trousers with a 5″ ankle width — they’re just straight. After seeing a couple of friends go this not-quite-super-skinny way, I decided that’s a compromise I too could make, necessitated by my lack of bird legs and my having hips of any kind.
And it still wasn’t easy. Even as I stood in the dressing room on the 8th floor of Barneys, I could barely look out of the corner of one eye at my image in the mirror. It’s just so weird, after years now of wearing (and loving) low rise, bootcut jeans, to see myself with such narrow ankles. Especially since I lived through skinny jeans the first time around. Remember the ones from the ’80s with the zippers at the ankles? Oh yeah…
Of course, the big plus is I get to showcase my shoes. But what heel? I don’t think I’m tall enough to pull off the flats. How long should the jeans be — covering the ankles, scrunched up over the heel? So many adjustments to make. Ooh, plus number two: I can wear them with all my long, cuddly Lainey sweaters. Take it from me: How I learned to stop worrying and love the skinny!
