Hey Jealousy

Tuesday, September 12th, 2006

I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t even had a chance to shop online. How wrong is that? I mean, not even a spare moment from time to time, in between the phone calls and emails, to order a pair of Manolos here, a Marc Jacobs dress there? Clearly, my priorities are all wrong. Either that, or I really need to rethink my career choices. Perhaps lottery winner and early retiree would be a better fit.

In truth, I have been looking online — but I’m disappointed to say that the Neiman’s, Saks, Bergdorf’s (and it goes without saying, Barneys) sites leave a lot to be desired. And I chose that word very carefully. The offerings are supposed to fill us hard-core shoppers with desire, sending us slathering with anticipation to drop everything to get thee to the designer shoe department.

Like: Where are the deep red patent leather Manolo pumps I’m looking for? Work with me, people! E-commerce is supposed to bring me more choices, not fewer, and for a few bucks more, with express shipping is supposed to come (almost) instant gratification! Meanwhile, certain friends of mine with more time to shop outside their own homes — imagine that! — are modeling their new wares every day. Oh I am green with envy… (A nice loden, really. I’ve got to get some shoes that color!)

Gold Rush!

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

Can I just say that I am loving all the heavy metal accessories for fall? I’ve always been a gold girl — the higher karat the better — so I feel like I’m already a leg up on the trend. Then again, I do need to update my collection!

It’s just a good excuse to maybe just maybe justify buying some signature pieces by Gurhan, this jewelry designer that I’m completely obsessed with. He works in hammered 24 karat gold, which is right up my alley. I can start small, say with this matrix diamond pendant — and then layer it (again with the layering this season!) with something like this long gold ball necklace. Then there’s this disc necklace, also good for layering.

For an all-in-one layering shortcut, I might just try something like this Jose & Maria Barrera five-strand necklace. Pretty dramatic but not too much. Then again, when it comes to gold, too much is never enough!

Layers? Cake!

Tuesday, September 5th, 2006

It’s official. When the calendar reads the day after Labor Day, it’s time to put away all your white clothes and get ready for jewel tones, tweeds, boots… I realize it’s not quite cool enough for the full-on fall wear in the magazines right now, but I’m thinking the layering trend is perfect for easing into the season.

This Marc Jacobs dress is sort of layering for dummies, with those built-in leather sleeves and everything. Wear it now (okay, maybe not right this minute, but soon) with a pair of patent crimson d’Orsay heels. Then, when it gets cold, say, early December, throw on some black tights and Marni tall boots and this very chic Diane von Furstenberg coat — and voila, you’ve been layered!

And for the transition from festive holiday dressing to the January blahs, I’m planning on ordering a little mink vest from the dressmaker to wear over thin cashmere turtlenecks early in the season, and later, under the super-cute, not-so-super-warm coats I’m eyeing… yes, including the DVF one mentioned above. Now that’s what I call form and function!
