Charmed, I’m Sure

I confess, I’m kind of a sucker for kitsch, and there’s no more fashionable kitsch than the charm bracelet. Where else can you wear your favorite hobbies, pets, flowers, etc. quite literally on your sleeve? Back when I was a pre-teen in Texas, I was obsessed with a jewelry designer named James Avery. All my friends and I ever wanted for birthdays and holidays were these sterling silver dangle rings with charms. I remember I had an owl ring, a bee ring and a frog ring. (I actually can’t believe they still make these, some 20 years later. And can I just say that I had no idea this designer was so religious?!)

But anyhow… I’m a grown-up now, and I still love me some animal charms. And I really love me this Louis Vuitton charm bracelet. It’s so stylish — and pricey at $3150 — that you hardly need a charm to go on it. Of course, if you’re gonna go kitsch, you might as well pile them on. This globe charm is a mere $2590. You can even wear an LV bag on your wrist ($2890).

A friend directed me to a less pricey alternative: C-H-A-R-M, which has no less than 11 different shoe charms. (I’m partial to this mule.) I guess part of the fun is to collect as you go along, but it’s so tempting to scoop up a dozen at a time!

heh…ahh James Avery…don’t forget the way he would make little silver charms of your school’s mascot (provided, of course, that your school was an extremely expensive private one.) I can’t believe you didnt’t notice he was religious; if a vampire walked into his store it would spontaneously combust from the sheer number of crosses. Somewhere I still have my sterling silver falcon charm…

OMG! I cannot tell you how much I loved those silver James Avery dangle rings! I, too, am from Texas and those rings were all the rage when I was a kid. I had a butterfly one.
I tried to bring several out to California when I moved to give to my friends, but they never caught on out here. Hmmmm, wonder why that was… ;)

I bet you’d love kitsch in musical form - well, an artistic play-up of kitsch. Charm bracelets always remind me of Regina Spektor’s “Soviet Kitsch”. She is without a doubt the most stylish of Russian expat Jewish New Yorker Antifolk/Jazz experimental performers.
