Flat on Your Feet

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

I’m what you might call a shorty, so I’ve never been one for flat shoes. I need — and take! — all the help I can get. Give me a four-inch heel any day. But the ballerina flat has made such headway the past few seasons, even in the wake of the wedge, and I have to say, I might just succumb this spring. There are just too many cute flats out there.

First off there’s this adorable Marc Jacobs Mouse Ballerina. I remember when MJ first did mouse shoes — I managed to find a pair of kitten-heeled black slingbacks at A La Mode in London, and I wore them to death. This update is almost as good…

I have a weakness for toile prints, so these Dior toile canvas print ballerina flats are a must-have!

And I think my obsession with Fendi’s B buckle has been well-documented enough that it goes without saying these Fendi patent B buckle flats are on my wishlist.

These Chloe luggage ballet flats are good basics for spring-into-summer.

And finally — last but not least — these Miu Miu jeweled bronze open-toe flats show one important thing: Who says you need four-inch heels for a little glamour?!

What’s In Your Closet?

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

What’s the best (and at the same time worst) thing about cleaning out your closet during a move? The surprises that you find in the recesses of your closet. On the one hand, it’s like being reunited with a long lost friend. On the other, you kick yourself for the months — years, even — of lost opportunities to wear said long lost friend. During my move, for instance, I rediscovered, ahem, a number of winter coats. And in the panic of trying to fit everything I own into a mere four closets, I actually thought about giving away two of them: a black wool double-breasted Dolce & Gabbana coat circa 2000, and a anthracite gray Prada wool coat circa 2003.

What was I thinking?!

Good thing the weather took a turn of the wintry last week, because I actually had the opportunity to become reacquainted with the Prada coat. And I decided that I still have much love for my old friend.

So what’s the oldest thing in your closet? Go find it! Embrace it! Give love another chance!

Garden Variety

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Okay, just this past weekend there was still snow on the ground. Yesterday it hit 77 degrees! What gives?! But I’m not complaining that March is going out like a lamb. Spring has sprung — and boy am I happy that I can finally put away my wooly tights!

Instead, I’m planting the seeds now for a colorful spring. I’ve got prints on my mind: Missoni Sole Long-Sleeve Blouson

And florals: Peter Som Wavy Floral Bell Sleeve Shirt

I’m packing for my move this weekend — and I think I might even throw caution to the wind and pack up all my winter sweaters first. Now that’s confidence!

The Infernal Equinox

Tuesday, March 20th, 2007

It’s March 20 — the vernal equinox — and there’s snow on the ground in New York City. Not what I was hoping for the beginning of spring! Still, by the calendar anyway, it’s that in-between time of the year, when (hopefully) you can put away your winter coat, but it’s too early to commit to a full spring/summer wardrobe. I mean, I’m all about the yellow now, but will I still be in June?

So I’m going to start slowly. I know I will need a spring coat, and this Valentino trench coat is pretty great — a classic wardrobe staple, with a bit of edge. Love the 3/4 sleeves too.

I also love this Fendi B. Fendi Canvas Shoulder Bag. There’s my touch of yellow!

Finally, there’s this Chloe pleated blouse and khaki skirt — would this make me look like a Girl Scout? Who cares? Bring on the badges!

Mellow Yellow

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Though my two sisters are 5 and 6 years older than I am, my mom used to sometimes dress us alike when we were kids. When we weren’t wearing identical pinstripe burgundy velvet overalls–dude, it was the ’70s–we wore long calico hippie dresses that did allow for some individuality: My oldest sister got it in red, my middle sister wore it in blue, and mine was yellow. Yellow was my favorite color when I was a kid, and though I shunned it when I reached high school (the sunny hue just didn’t go with my Goth lite all-black look and attitude), I’ve embraced it again… in moderation.

But then came Michelle Williams’s Oscar dress last year, and Naomi Watts’s dress this year… and this spring, suddenly… helloooo, yellow!

Don’t worry, I’m not going to go crazy and go all yellow this season. But you might as well start at the bottom, and to me these Christian Louboutin gold satin slingback espadrilles are the perfect foundation for spring!
