Are You Jellin’?

Tuesday, April 24th, 2007

Since we’ve been reliving my school days in fashion lately — from leggings to skinny jeans and beyond — I figured this day would come: Jellies are back! But not back soon enough for me. During last week’s torrential rains, I was wishing I had something stylish and water resistant to put on my feet while I gingerly waded through the flooded streets of New York City. (It was as if my two feet fell in line behind Noah’s other animals… two by two…) Only after the city dried out did I venture beyond the ‘hood to pick up a pair of these adorable Marc Jacobs jelly mouse flats — speaking of all God’s creatures — in smoky gray. They were the perfect mix of middle school memories and my favorite MJ shoes ever!

Flat on Your Feet

Tuesday, April 17th, 2007

I’m what you might call a shorty, so I’ve never been one for flat shoes. I need — and take! — all the help I can get. Give me a four-inch heel any day. But the ballerina flat has made such headway the past few seasons, even in the wake of the wedge, and I have to say, I might just succumb this spring. There are just too many cute flats out there.

First off there’s this adorable Marc Jacobs Mouse Ballerina. I remember when MJ first did mouse shoes — I managed to find a pair of kitten-heeled black slingbacks at A La Mode in London, and I wore them to death. This update is almost as good…

I have a weakness for toile prints, so these Dior toile canvas print ballerina flats are a must-have!

And I think my obsession with Fendi’s B buckle has been well-documented enough that it goes without saying these Fendi patent B buckle flats are on my wishlist.

These Chloe luggage ballet flats are good basics for spring-into-summer.

And finally — last but not least — these Miu Miu jeweled bronze open-toe flats show one important thing: Who says you need four-inch heels for a little glamour?!

Mellow Yellow

Thursday, March 15th, 2007

Though my two sisters are 5 and 6 years older than I am, my mom used to sometimes dress us alike when we were kids. When we weren’t wearing identical pinstripe burgundy velvet overalls–dude, it was the ’70s–we wore long calico hippie dresses that did allow for some individuality: My oldest sister got it in red, my middle sister wore it in blue, and mine was yellow. Yellow was my favorite color when I was a kid, and though I shunned it when I reached high school (the sunny hue just didn’t go with my Goth lite all-black look and attitude), I’ve embraced it again… in moderation.

But then came Michelle Williams’s Oscar dress last year, and Naomi Watts’s dress this year… and this spring, suddenly… helloooo, yellow!

Don’t worry, I’m not going to go crazy and go all yellow this season. But you might as well start at the bottom, and to me these Christian Louboutin gold satin slingback espadrilles are the perfect foundation for spring!

Silver Belles

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

I’ve been all about gold for years now — I even somehow managed to remain immune to the marketing (read: brainwashing) campaign of the platinum engagement ring — but for spring, I’m feeling a different precious metal. Maybe it’s just all the cute silver shoes I’ve been casing out…

It kind of started with these Louis Vuitton sandals, which — crap! — are already out of stock. (For a peek, look on the LV homepage.) There are also these Jimmy Choo’s cork wedges, but they’re sky-high, and all I know is I kept turning my ankle in my Louboutin espadrilles the last few seasons. Gucci’s wedges are still a little too high, but these Christian Louboutin Miminette wedges are a little more manageable.

For flats, I love these Valentino ones — cuter than your basic ballerina flats. More casual are these Gucci embossed thongs.

Seriously, would it be overkill to get a pair of each?

Second Time Around

Wednesday, February 14th, 2007

Just got back from a whirlwind weekend in L.A… I ended up not having time to order any of the dresses I was considering for the Grammys, and instead got a couple of items from my wonderful dressmaker… And appropriately enough for a year in which several of the record labels went green for their parties (hybrid cars shuttling guests, organic chicken dinners and all), I even recycled some wedding wear!

On Friday night I wore this silk dress with beading along the neckline — which I accessorized with some feathered Manolos and the JHan pearl and woven gold wire necklace I wore on my wedding day.

On Saturday night, I wore a gold-green brocade A-line dress (the one I wore at my bridal shower, no less!) with gold lizard Manolos and the ivory mink shrug I wore with my wedding dress:

And on Grammy night, I wore a new black satin “pumpkin” dress with a big bow on the back (a little worse for wear, just out of my suitcase and photographed here!), with the Rene Caovilla heels I wore at my wedding.

Now I just have to figure out how to recycle my wedding gown. Hmm… Halloween maybe? ;-)
