Vacation, All I Ever Wanted…

May 16th, 2007

Vacation, time to get away! It’s been far too long since I’ve had a proper, do-nothing, sit-on-the-beach vacation — okay, how long ago is never? I’ve never been the sort to sit on the beach and do nothing. Will I get bored? Will I find somewhere to shop? Most importantly: What will I wear?!

Let’s start with these Fendi Cube Sunglasses. . .

…and add a bag. Though is this Celine Bittersweet Striped Large Bagtoo heavy for the Caribbean?

For a dinner out, I found this Missoni Assenzio Boatneck Dress. . .

. . . that could be worn with the Fendi Spicy Patent Sandal

So that’s one day down, six to go. Oh yeah, and what about the swimwear??

Go! Run, don’t walk! Today is the day… The one and only Manolo sample sale. If you’re reading this over your morning coffee, you may already be too late! The masses have already gathered. If you’re just arriving now, you’ll see that the early birds probably have different colored tickets from yours and that can’t be a good thing. Do you have the patience to wait it out? Did your boss really believe that excuse (cough, cough) you gave over the phone? Sick? Try sick with anxiety! Is someone in that room scooping up every last pair in your size? Is everyone else a size 36 too??

Is it worth it? The wait, the anxiety, the thrown elbows? The cold sweat once you emerge and realize what a mega-dent you just made in your bank account? (Did you really need that pair of lavender crocodile Carolynes?)

Hell yeah! What are you waiting for?

As in, Save Our Sample Sales! Yep, it’s that time of year again… the sample sales are coming fast and furious, and I just don’t know if I have it in me anymore. Shocking, I know! But the thrill of the chase (or rather of the chasing of the girl who just made off with the last XS) no longer has its hold on me. It’s been a long, long time since I was so excited to sharpen my elbows and get my sample-sale shop on that I woke up before my alarm clock even went off. Okay, so maybe part of the problem is that I’m so sleep deprived these days that I’m no longer capable of waking up before my alarm… but that’s another story altogether!

And anyhow, I feel a little disappointed in myself. Where is my sense of competition, my appetite for finding the perfect gem among a bin of castoffs? Perhaps I can ease myself back in, dip my toes into the kiddie pool, like the Lola Hats sample sale this week (Tuesday to Thursday, 10-7, 535 Eighth Ave. 20th floor), rather than the deep end of, say, an Hermes sale. Stay tuned!

Since we’ve been reliving my school days in fashion lately — from leggings to skinny jeans and beyond — I figured this day would come: Jellies are back! But not back soon enough for me. During last week’s torrential rains, I was wishing I had something stylish and water resistant to put on my feet while I gingerly waded through the flooded streets of New York City. (It was as if my two feet fell in line behind Noah’s other animals… two by two…) Only after the city dried out did I venture beyond the ‘hood to pick up a pair of these adorable Marc Jacobs jelly mouse flats — speaking of all God’s creatures — in smoky gray. They were the perfect mix of middle school memories and my favorite MJ shoes ever!

I’m what you might call a shorty, so I’ve never been one for flat shoes. I need — and take! — all the help I can get. Give me a four-inch heel any day. But the ballerina flat has made such headway the past few seasons, even in the wake of the wedge, and I have to say, I might just succumb this spring. There are just too many cute flats out there.

First off there’s this adorable Marc Jacobs Mouse Ballerina. I remember when MJ first did mouse shoes — I managed to find a pair of kitten-heeled black slingbacks at A La Mode in London, and I wore them to death. This update is almost as good…

I have a weakness for toile prints, so these Dior toile canvas print ballerina flats are a must-have!

And I think my obsession with Fendi’s B buckle has been well-documented enough that it goes without saying these Fendi patent B buckle flats are on my wishlist.

These Chloe luggage ballet flats are good basics for spring-into-summer.

And finally — last but not least — these Miu Miu jeweled bronze open-toe flats show one important thing: Who says you need four-inch heels for a little glamour?!
